Babysitter
Clover was sitting in the living room, listening to music on her headphones. There was a knock at the door, but Clover couldn't hear it. Cirrus walked up to the door and answered it. Meadowlark and Cheval. In Meadowlark’s right hoof was a small bundle. “Hi, dad." Meadowlark greeted softly.
"Hi Meadowlark, Cheval. How are you?"
“We are good.”
“Good.” Cirrus looked at the bundle. “Is that her?”
Meadowlark nodded and situated the blanket enough for Cirrus to see the face of a sleeping filly that wasn’t even a year old.
Cirrus smiled, "She's beautiful."
"Thank you," Meadowlark smiled.
“You’re welcome. Come on in. Make yourselves at home.”
"Thank you." Meadowlark and Cheval sat down on the couch.
Clover noticed the couple out of the corner of her eye and practically snatched the headphones out of her ears. She practically screamed, “Meadowlark! Cheval!”
Meadowlark quickly motioned for Clover to keep her voice down and pointed to the bundle.
“Oh. Right." Clover moved closer to examine the bundle. "Is that-?"
She nodded, “Her name’s Viola.”
“That’s a nice name.”
"Thank you."
“And she’s so cute.”
“Just wait until she’s awake.” Cheval joked.
Meadowlark elbowed Cheval teasingly. "She's still adorable."
"And loud."
“I know, but at least we know she can get our attention easily.”
“Just like her mother,” Cirrus teased.
“Yes, that is- Hey!”
Everyone laughed.
"What's going on in here?" Spotlight asked.
Everyone looked at her.
“Hey Mom,” Meadowlark greeted.
“Hi sweetie,” Spotlight gave Meadowlark a big hug, “How have you been?”
“Couldn’t be better.”
“That’s good to hear. And how about my son-in-law?” She went over to Cheval and gave him an equally big hug.
“Just seeing our little flower bloom brings a smile on my face.”
“Wait ‘till she’s a teenager.” Cirrus joked.
“Don’t remind me,” Meadowlark said blankly.
“Sorry, couldn’t resist.”
“Could we just cross that bridge when we get to it?”
“Okay, okay. So would you two like to stay for lunch?”
“We’d love to.”
“Good. We’re having nachos.”
“Oh...my favorite.” Clover noted it.
“When will it be ready?” Cirrus asked.
“It’ll take me about half an hour.” Spotlight noted.
“Okay, we can wait that long.” Meadowlark said.
“Okay.” Spotlight went into the kitchen and started working on the meal.
“So how have you been doing, Clover?” Meadowlark asked.
“Good.”
“How’s school?”
“Meh… But there have been some interesting things…”
“Oh?”
“Like did you know Teddy has a sister?”
“Teddy? Wasn’t he the bully you talked about?”
Clover nodded. “We never even heard about her because she was kidnapped when she was six.”
"Kidnapped?"
“Yeah… They just found her about a month ago and she suffers from post traumatic stress disorder."
"That's...horrible."
"Do they know who captured her?" Cheval asked.
“Not that I know of. Oh, and some of my friends have started dating." Clover mentioned.
"Really? Who?" Meadowlark asked.
“Well, Lancer’s dating Bright Eyes, Melody is dating a guy named Resonance, causing Ace to date Starlight, Teddy’s dating Sweetheart, and… I think that’s it.”
"So...are you dating someone?"
"No, and I'm fine with that for now. Oh and did you hear that Lancer’s mom is pregnant right now?”
"Really? When is she due?"
"In about ten months I think."
"I see, do they know if it's a boy or girl?"
"Not yet. Or they haven't told anyone if they do."
“Oh.”
Meadowlark felt something touch her foreleg, she looked down and saw that Viola was awake. “Why hello there,” Meadowlark said in a babyish tone.
Clover looked at the awoken baby, "She's so cute!" She said quietly. "Let me go see if mom can see her." Clover went into the kitchen to retrieve Spotlight. “Mom?
Spotlight looked at her. “Yes Clover?”
“Viola’s awake.”
"Oh, do you think I can see her?"
“I think so.”
“Okay.”
Clover and Spotlight went back into the living room to see Viola. Spotlight sat close to Meadowlark and carefully studied the filly. She was violet and had a red mane. “She is so CUTE.” Spotlight smiled, “Just like her mother.”
“Well...she also has Cheval’s eyes.”
“And mane.”
“Yes...she’s also cute like her father.”
“Yes she is.”
“Did you bring some food for her?”
“We did.”
“Okay, good. Because we probably don’t have anymore.” Cirrus chuckled.
“Ha ha,” Meadowlark said.
“Do you need to get back to the nachos?” Clover asked.
“Oh...right.” Spotlight ran back to the meal in the kitchen. When she got back, she saw that the nachos were ready to be served. She started to take all the food into the refrigerator, “I hope you’re all hungry.”
“I’m starving,” Clover said, bolting straight to her place at the table.
“I thought you might, so there’s plenty for you.”
Everyone took their seats and started to place the food on their plates. “Smells good honey,” Cirrus said.
“Thank you.” Spotlight smiled.
“No problem.”
As they ate, Meadowlark looked at Clover, “Clover, Cheval and I would like to go see a movie this weekend, and we were wondering if you could look after Viola.”
“Oh...Um...can I think about it?”
“Sure, but we’ll need to know by Saturday. Oh, and we’d be willing to pay you…”
“I can’t ask you to do that.”
“We don’t mind, trust me, I know how difficult it is watching a little one.”
“But you’re family...I don’t think I can.”
“Alright. Besides, how can you resist this face?”
“I can’t.” Clover smiled.

Saturday couldn’t come any sooner. Clover was excited to spend time with her new baby niece. She was already planning what they could do together, even though Viola is still a baby. They could watch tv together, play games, read stories, and maybe Clover could teach her new words. Oh what fun they will have together! That is if Meadowlark and Cheval will ever leave. She didn't exactly want to get them out the door… but she did wish they'd hurry.
“And you’re sure you have your purse?” Cheval asked his wife.
“Yes, I have it right here,” Meadowlark said holding said purse.
"Does it have the money?"
“Yes, I checked.”
“And do you-”
“Yes. Have I ever forgotten something?”
“Well-”
“Don’t answer that.”
"Well, if you say so."
Meadowlark turned to Clover. “And you have the list I wrote down for you, right?”
“It’s on the refrigerator.”
"Alright, and you have the diapers?"
"Yup, in the living room."
"And the-"
"You two were made for each other."
Cheval and Meadowlark both laughed. "Well...we should probably get going," Cheval noted.
"Um...yeah. You know the number for the emergency room, right?" Meadowlark asked.
Clover rubbed her head, "Yes!"
"Oh...right..."
"We should go now, Meadowlark." Cheval pointed out.
“Right, if we miss it, it will be two hours before we can catch the next showtime.”
"Right, so..."
"But-"
"Meadowlark..." Cheval gave Meadowlark a look.
“Alright…”
"We'll see you in a couple hours, Clover."
“Okay,” Clover smiled, “Be careful.”
"You too," Cheval and Meadowlark both left.
“Now…” Clover turned to Viola. “Who want’s to have some fun?”
Viola giggled.
"I was hoping you'd say that. Now...would you like to hear a story...or watch something...or what?"
The baby tilted her head.
"Hmm...would you like to draw?"
All of Clover's words were Greek to Viola.
"Guess I'm a little hard to understand, huh? Well, we’ll figure something out.”
Viola started looking around randomly.
Suddenly, Clover smelled...something. The smell was rancid...it smelled like- “Oh no.”
Viola giggled.

After changing Viola’s very dirty diaper, Clover decided to get a book out and read it with Viola. It was a short picture book, but she figured Viola might like it.
“And the wolf huffed and puffed and and blew the house in,” she read.
Viola gasped.
Clover smiled and continued reading. “The little piggies ran to the third piggy’s house, but the wolf followed them!”
Viola leaned closer.
“The wolf knocked on the piggies’ door and said ‘Little pig, little pig. Let me in!’”
“Not by the hair of our chinny chin chin!”
“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!”
“But the wolf tried and tried, but couldn’t blow the house down.”
Viola smiled and clapped her hooves together.
“And the wolf ran away embarrassed and left the piggies alone forever. The end.”
Viola cheered.
“So now what do you want to do?”
Viola whimpered.
“Are you hungry?”
Viola nodded.
“Okay, I’ll go get you some food.”
Clover sat Viola down and looked at the list. When she saw that the food was listed as being in the refrigerator, she opened the door and got the food out. She immediately got the proportions described and started preparing them.
Once she had finished, she took the drink to Viola and started feeding her. After only a few moments Viola had finished the formula. “Wow, that was fast,” Clover said with a giggle.
Suddenly, Viola started to cry.
“Uh oh.” Clover sniffed, but there was no smell. “Well, I already changed your diaper, so that can’t be it. Maybe you’d like another story?”
Viola continued crying.
“A game? A nap? Anything?”
She only continued crying.
“I think I’m gonna have to get some help.” She ran to the phone and dialed Sweetheart’s number.
The phone rang a few times, before, “Hello?” Sweetheart asked.
“Sweetheart, I need your help.”
“What is it?”
“I was feeding Viola and when she was done she started crying and I don’t know what to do.”
“Uh...wait...who’s Viola?”
“My baby niece.”
“Okay… You said you had just fed her?”
“Yes.”
“Have you burped her yet?”
“No…”
“Then that could be the problem.”
“But how do I do that?”
“Just hold her with her head over your shoulder and gently pat her back.”
“Um...Okay...is that it?”
“Pretty much, just do it until she burps.”
“Okay, thanks, Sweetheart.”
“You’re welcome. Bye.”
“Bye.” Clover hung up and rushed back to the crying Viola. She held her like Sweetheart had said and started to pat Viola’s back. Nothing seemed to happen for a long time, until finally, Viola belched.
Clover breathed a sigh of relief, “Well, that’s better, huh?”
Viola giggled.
“What would you like to do now?”
She raised both of her hooves up.
“Hmm...would you like to watch something?”
Viola cooed at Clover.
“I’ll take that as a yes.” Clover grinned.

After about an hour of watching television, Viola started to get a little drowsy. Clover noticed this and asked, “Are you getting tired?”
Viola’s head started to droop.
“I guess that answers that.”
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Clover quickly and softly went over to the door and opened it, revealing Cheval and Meadowlark. “Hi guys, Viola’s starting to fall asleep.”
“Oh, okay, then we’d better get her home.” Meadowlark whispered, entering the home. She picked up the drowsy foal and headed out the door, “Thank you for watching her, Clover.”
“You’re welcome, I had a lot of fun.” Clover smiled.
NRJ: Hey Clover, if ya ever need another babysitting job, I could use you, like, now.
NRJ: Might've noticed I published it instead of Lancewing, dont worry, he's still doing it, I just thought "these episodes haven't been put on here yet, might as well upload em".
