True, that box art never did help matters.

well... theres a comic and toy series known as g2...but has characters from g1... the series after g2 is called the beast era...but its still set in g1... does tales share any connections to the first cartoon? other than character designs? The "generations" in the MLP fandom refers to the physical molds used to create the toy ponies - it has nothing to do with the TV shows (although to be fair, the original show and Tales do share similar art styles for both their cartoons and comics, especially in comparison to other gens). Thus Gen 1 refers to the original molds from the 80s - from which the Tales girls were made. This seems to be a pretty simple reference site if you're curious - www.strawberryreef.com/There was never any confusion over which generations ponies came from until FiM came along, to be honest. For whatever reason, fans of FiM started arguing with MLP collectors (who'd been around since the 80s) that their classification system for the generations was wrong, and that Tales should be considered G2. Basically FiM fans wanted to base the gens on the TV shows, completely ignoring the already established system that collectors had in place at that time. Hence why if you talk to collectors, they'll probably be super irritated if you call Tales G2, because they've already argued this case to death with FiM fans who didn't know MLP existed until FiM came out. Dont kill me...but i think i like the brony method better. but thats due to me being a tf fan where....pretty much every toy line had some form of media (except CHUG) But be glad there wasnt an mlp series for every toy line. it means less complaining.

You're free to prefer what you want, but the brony method is flawed. Not to mention (again) that it's highly disrespectful to the community of collectors to barge in on something they've been involved in for 20 years and argue with them that they're doing it wrong. But I might as well stop there, otherwise I'll delve into a rather angry rant about brony culture and how much I dislike it. (Disclaimer - Obviously not all bronies are bad, but I'm sure you all know what kind of bronies I'm talking about.) Also - the only MLP series I care about is Tales, to be honest. I enjoyed the original as a kid, but I have zero interest in anything post-Tales (other than G2 toys, because they made some seriously cool ones with awesome accessories!). And enough people already complain about Tales as it is. Anyway I just don't want you to go away thinking that I have anything against you. You just happened to tread on a very sore spot when it comes to the MLP community. But you like (and write) Tales so we're cool!

Bronies aren't the brightest bunch, or the nicest in many cases... but they make some pretty cool stuff. I get the feeling that, ten years from now, we'll have a full-on Tales Fanmade Season 2 in the works. And it would be glorious.
And you aren't one of those bronies, notramjet. If you were... you wouldn't be here.

But still, a lot were real nice. Transfandom on the other hoof...

Yeah, true. It's more in perspective to us. I had a few comment of a story a while ago, and they were very nice. And of course the Transformers fandom is worse; you told me that already a while ago.
Thanks for the follow, too! I've gotta get into the features of a member more, heh.

Those two ponies are from G3. They appear in most if not all of the G3 movies. There's G1 (from the 80s to early 90s, then G2 (still early 90s) G3, (2003-2010) and fianally G4 (2010 to present)

G2 is late nineties, StarSwirl05.

To be more precise, the toyline for G2 lasted from 1997 to 2003, after which G3 started up.

Okay, let's try this again...
The generations are decided by the toy molds.
G1 included the original series and Tales, and lasted from the eighties to the early nineties. Often, people call Tales Generation 1.5, because the cartoon is so different from the original and Friends.
G2 was a line of toys that went from late nineties to early 0's. It featured taller and ganglier molds and didn't have much in way of media.
G3 was the one in effect for the mid-0s until the late-0s. In the middle of it, there was a stylistic switch to G3.5, which was more 'chibi-ish' as many describe it. It also had a switch to the Core 7 before the 3.5 switch.
G4 is the present one, Friendship is Magic.

Core 7 started in 2008 though. This when the poses were cut down to 1.
