If it's what looks like a sword, why is he afraid most of the time? Shouldn't having a sword make him more brave?

EThat's true but his prsonaly remembers to me as child. In the age of Lancer I rather liked to play whit the girls than the boys.

He isn't a scaredy-cat... he wasn't afraid to trap the ponies on a boat in Happy Birthday Sweetheart, or to stand up for himself by the end of Great Lemonade Stand Wars. Besides, he was one of the biggest heroes of Bon Bon in The Masquerade.
And boys who prefer playing with girls aren't scaredy-cats either, necessarily. They just have a better connection with them.

That isn't officially stated, and though it makes sense, it could very well be a sword of some sort or other. Either way, it makes sense. Swords could represent the French cavalry, and they were really brave guys back in medieval times (and Lancer is brave). The sword might also be somewhat linked to nobility, and Lancer is part of a rich family. But at the same time, the French Fleur-de-lis is elegant. Lancer has at least some finesse to warrant it, and besides, it represents the boy scouts.
Then there are the people who joke that it's a banana...
